WoW 154: On a strategy to connect more deeply with strangers and friends

Abstract wisps of pastel colors swirl in a dreamy background, creating a serene and ethereal atmosphere. No text or figures present.

Idea

A hassle.

A distraction.

Another person who will let you down.

A fascinating human with stories to tell.

A new potential friend.

An opportunity to connect.

It turns out, the way you see people often determines how you experience them, and certainly influences how they respond to you.

We can all fall into the trap of not treating people with the respect and kindness we wish we were treated with.

So slow down, be present, and be kind. One of the greatest things we can strive for is to be kind to others.

Try this on:

The next person you meet, whether virtually or in person, imagine that they are an old friend that you haven’t seen in years…someone who was one of your all time favorites. A person you’re very, very fond of.

Greet them with unbridled joy, excitement, and anticipation of getting to know them. Compliment and affirm them regarding a positive attribute of theirs. If you meet them with this genuine positivity and optimism it is infectious. This simple strategy to connect more deeply will energize your connection with them. Who knows, you might have just made a new friend. Perhaps for a moment, a season, or a lifetime.

Kindness goes a long way. Be the friend you wish others were to you.

Quote

“Hospitality means primarily the creation of free space where the stranger can enter and become a friend instead of an enemy. Hospitality is not to change people, but to offer them space where change can take place. It is not to bring men and women over to our side, but to offer freedom not disturbed by dividing lines.”

How can I be kind today?

What strengths does this person have? How can I communicate what I see?

Who are 3 people I can encourage today?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, you are my truest friend. You are closer than my closest friend. You want the best for my life and you know that your will for my life is the best. Despite my darkness and difficulties, you are faithful, and you purify and strengthen me for the blessing of knowing and following you. Help me to be hospitable to your Spirit today, so I can better love you and others. Amen.

Live wisely,

Josh
